Wedding photojournalism – our work in WPJA

In this year editions of the WPJA wedding photojournalism contests, we have seen ten of our images awarded in the general competition so far and a few extra awarded on the Engagement Portrait competition.

WPJA (Wedding Photojournalists Association) is a directory that gathers wedding photographers from around the world. In common they have the documentary vision of the day, in an approach that brings the inspiration and the attitude of the photojournalism to the world of marriage. According to WPJA's own description, they are photographers who, using “the tools of photographic narrative, (…) capture the real moments and emotions of the most important celebration in the lives of two people coming together as one.”.

When we started as Menino conhece Menina, we brought to our wedding photography the street photography that Daniel was already doing. That is why we feel at home when doing wedding photojournalism and today and, although we do not want to be confined to very rigid or watertight definitions, we continue to regard this documentary vision as one of the most marked personality traits in our photography.

Therefore, we are very excited to see some of our images awarded on the contests organized by WPJA. A particularity in these contests is the fact that the jury is composed by photojournalists not related to the wedding field, a detail that seems interesting to us since it allows the selection to be made through a screening free of prejudices and disconnected from the dominant tendencies of the area. On the other hand, going through the juries list and finding photographers of such unquestionable quality is an extra motivation to put our photographs to their appreciation, it's a privilege!
